Unibet Faces Scrutiny Over Customer Due Diligence in the Netherlands

Unibet is under scrutiny from the Dutch Gaming Authority for its customer due diligence practices. The KSA has mandated improvements in the company's anti-money laundering measures, particularly in transaction monitoring. Following previous fines for weak player interventions, Unibet's compliance is set for re-evaluation.

Unibet Faces Scrutiny Over Customer Due Diligence

The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) has issued a directive for Unibet to enhance its customer due diligence measures in light of recent violations regarding anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. This announcement comes as the KSA prepares for a follow-up inspection to assess the operator's compliance with Dutch laws.

On Friday, the KSA highlighted that Unibet's current transaction monitoring and control measures “do not align well” with the company's stated policies. This dissonance raises concerns about the effectiveness of their AML practices.

Effective AML Monitoring Required

The KSA's objective is to ensure that the thresholds set for ongoing player monitoring are not only established but also effectively implemented. This means that Unibet must take significant steps to improve how it monitors transactions and investigates the source of funds for its players.

In response to the KSA's findings, Unibet has reportedly adopted a “co-operative attitude” towards the investigation. The company has ceased some of the violations identified by the regulator, indicating a willingness to comply with the new directives. A follow-up inspection is expected once the current directive period concludes.

Fresh Enforcement Action Against Unibet

This latest directive is not the first time Unibet has faced enforcement action from the KSA. In December, the company was hit with a substantial €4 million fine due to “weak” player interventions. The regulator pointed out that Unibet had failed to act promptly with players who were depositing significant amounts of money—thousands of euros per day—without adequate scrutiny.

In addition to this fine, Unibet accepted another penalty of €400,000 in December 2024 for allowing players who had self-excluded to access its platform. These repeated violations highlight ongoing challenges for Unibet in ensuring robust compliance with AML regulations.

Note:

As the landscape of online gaming evolves, regulatory bodies are increasingly vigilant about enforcing AML standards to protect consumers and maintain the integrity of the industry.
