BC.GAME is making waves in the African gaming landscape with its recent acquisition of a sports betting and casino license in Nigeria. This strategic move marks a significant step in the company's ongoing efforts to penetrate regulated markets across the continent.
On Monday, BC.GAME officially launched its sportsbook and casino offerings in Nigeria through its newly established domain, bcbet.ng. The license was granted by the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority, positioning Nigeria as the second regulated market for BC.GAME, following a similar achievement in Kenya last year.
Operating from Anjouan, where it holds a local gambling license, BC.GAME is poised to capitalize on Nigeria's dynamic gambling environment. Kar Kheng Giam, the newly appointed CEO of BC.GAME, emphasized the company's commitment to providing an exceptional user experience tailored for the Nigerian market.
Statement:
Giam highlighted the importance of clarity and transparency in the user experience, noting that as they venture into new markets like Nigeria, they aim to simplify the platform while enhancing communication with users.
He further remarked, “Nigeria boasts one of the most passionate sports fanbases globally, particularly in football, and the growing interest in digital gaming presents a perfect opportunity for us to merge these elements in a market ripe for long-term growth.”
Nigeria's Emerging Gambling Market
The youthful demographic and increasing mobile penetration in Nigeria have positioned the country as one of the most promising emerging gambling markets worldwide. Recent data from H2 Gambling Capital reveals that Nigeria's interactive gross win reached approximately $1.17 billion last year, with projections suggesting it could soar to nearly $2.5 billion by 2030.
In its announcement, BC.GAME acknowledged the immense potential within the Nigerian market, stating, “With a mobile-first population, rising internet access, and a growing appetite for digital entertainment, Nigeria is poised for steady growth in casino and sports betting. The regulatory landscape is also evolving positively.”
BC.GAME's Licensing Strategy
The launch in Nigeria is part of a broader strategy by BC.GAME to expand into regulated markets, complementing its existing license in Anjouan. However, the company has faced its share of challenges, including the withdrawal of its license in Curaçao last December, which was attributed to an increasingly difficult operating climate.
This decision followed a court ruling in November that declared BC.GAME bankrupt due to failure to repay players. Additionally, the company lost its white label license in the UK, raising eyebrows regarding its sponsorship agreement with Leicester City Football Club.
Historically, BC.GAME has operated as an offshore entity in various global markets without local licenses, which has sparked concerns about its long-term viability and regulatory compliance.
